B. What is the biggest barrier for the young people in Turkey? What about in Europe? How do you think, it would be possible to overcome this barrier?

C. Europe and Turkey. What do you think of European Union and Turkey’s membership situation? Do you think, it is a necessity for the Turkey to be a full-member? If yes, Why if no, Why not?

D. Do you think, the Europeans have prejudices against the Turkish people? If you think so, what the wrong things which are in fact not true? How is it possible to eliminate those prejudices?

E. Have you ever been to Europe? If yes, where have you been? When? Was it through a EU project? What are the things that an EU project adds to young participants?

G. What are the systems or channels for the young people in Turkey to make the authority hear himself/herself? What is your (or somebody you know) experience of being involved into politics?

Results:

A. What do you think about the prejudices of Turkish people against the Europeans? Do you think, the Turkish have any prejudices against Europe and European Union? If you think, yes what are those prejudices? Is there a way to eliminate those prejudices?

Yes, they do. For example, we think the Italians eat only pizza and they sleep all the time, the Germans drink beer all the time and the girls in the east Europe loves money a lot.

To overcome this, we must join project to share and learn our cultures. We must visit the countries we have prejudices and see how they live.
B. What is the biggest barrier for the young people in Turkey? What about in Europe? How do you think, it would be possible to overcome this barrier?

The biggest problem of the young people is education system. The system we have is only trying to teach us but it does not show us how to live, how to improve our skills. So we want a system which will help us improve our life skills.

C. Europe and Turkey. What do you think of European Union and Turkey’s membership situation? Do you think, it is a necessity for the Turkey to be a full-member? If yes, Why if no, Why not?

We must be a full-member because,
This will help us be better at human rights and freedom,
We will not have visa problems,
Our life standards will increase,
We will have more rights in Europe,
We will have ore interactions with the people in Europe,
The prejudices against the Turkish may decrease.

But it is thought at some settings that The European Union is a Christian Club, which will be impossible for Turkey to be a member of.

D. Do you think, the Europeans have prejudices against the Turkish people? If you think so, what the wrong things which are in fact not true? How is it possible to eliminate those prejudices?

Yes, they do. They are often surprised when they become our friends and they say we did not know the Turkish people were so friendly like this.

L They think, all the Turkish women wear scarves over their heads and they think all Turkish have black skin, they are surprised when they see we also have white skins. And they say the Turkish are barbarians.

Why they have prejudice:
Historical background (big wars) and today’s political relations
Social rights,
Cultural Differences,
The differences in the Education System,
The differences in the opportunities

This leads to problems that
Misunderstanding,
No communication
Subjective views,

E. Have you ever been to Europe? If yes, where have you been? When? Was it through a EU project? What are the things that an EU project adds to young participants?

Hamid: yes, to Italy this year. We improve our foreign language skills, learn other cultures, and make new friends.
We get rid of our prejudices. And learn many new things.

Aynur: Yes, to Belgium in March. I learned new cultures and new people.

Furkan: Yes, to Germany, last year. My English improved a great deal. And I learned other cultures.

F. Do you think, it is a necessity for the young people to be involved in politics? Do you think, the politicians need to contact young people before giving decisions about their future and current lives? How can this be made possible?

Yes, it is a necessity. This way, we can improve our critical thinking skills. For the politicians to make a welfare country and for the welfare of its youth, they have to ask the young people their ideas.
In order to do this,
  • They have to learn about the needs of the young people,
  • They must give training about politics and political life,
  • There must be youth committees,
  • It must be fully legal for the young be involved in politics without conditions.

G. What are the systems or channels for the young people in Turkey to make the authority hear himself/herself? What is your (or somebody you know) experience of being involved into politics?

These are writing letters or complaints or through some associations. Also the internet and media can be used. These projects are also a channel for young people.

4th Meeting

The 4th Meeting of CIAK was held on the 13th of December 2012. The group met in front of the National Education Central Office and headed for the Directorate for Sports and Youth of Muratpasa.
In the search for the systems to raise the quality of integration of youth into the politic and democratic life, we came across with the directorate which is responsible for all kinds of sport and youth activities. And before this year, they were more concentrated on Sports and Sporting Clubs but this year, they have opened their Youth Centres.

We wanted to search, learn and get involved into the activities organised by this govermental  organisation which is supported by the state but also working with an association framework.

The participants of the group wanted to get registered for the Volunteer Activities and their contacts have been realised.

Two of them are going to work as Youth Representatives of their school, announcing Youth Local Activities/Organisations/Panels/Competitions and others to the other young people at their school. Two others registered for a Youth Research tour to take place in January 2013, to the Eastern Part of Anatolia bordering with Georgia.

As the young people asked/learned and inquired they found many interesting activities they can get involved and they also need to work as a representative of the local body at the social youth groups they belong to.
This can be taken as a big step to increase the representation skills of the CIAK participants, they, as the more young people they represent, the more their skills of representation will improve.

Firstly, the meeting started with the short description of CIAK Project to the other activity participants. And then the following activities were conducted.
1)      Ice-breaking and warm up: Young people are wanted to find a pair from the group and introduce themselves. After two minutes, the partners talk about each other to the whole group.
2)      Look at the visuals and talk: The young people are given the list of pictures and they are wanted to tell and explain the effects of the kind of problem/barrier they associate each picture with.
3)      The previous activity brought again the “communication barrier” forward.  Connected with that, the activity that focuses the differences between the messages sent and the perception of them was conducted. In this activity, which is called “BUG” young people are wanted to draw a bug following the instructions one by one. Eventually, it is found out that, neither the  drawn bugs of all participants are similar nor any of them to the original. Which brought  post reflection session on communication?

The reflection session of this activity focuses on finding solutions and putting their plan into practice knowing that they have to act all together as a group to be successful.
5)      The final activity, also focuses on communication, appropriate leadership behaviours and communication. The imaginary sugar cube firm is managed by young people.  The leader finds out that if he/she consults the team for their opinion the rate of success is higher. At the same time, the participants find out that on the condition that they recognize their skills and capacities, it is more efficient for them to set goals for themselves.

The young people have shared the barriers they face in their daliy lives using visuals (either the photos they have previously taken, or from the internet they have chosen, each speaking of min. two barriers) being inspired by the photos, everybody shared opions how these affect them as barriers.

Later on, we started to work in sub groups each group taking one of the major barrier into analysis and writing the reasons and the results of this barrier.

Finally in order to see and summarize what we really find out as barriers for young people in Antalya we worked in two groups and listed all the problems that were mentioned either at the meeting or have been considered before the meeting by the participants. The listed items are planned to be used as a reference for the questionnaire to be conducted on approximately 250 other young people and analysed.

After the first phase of the meeting, the second phase went on with the Education Manager. The brainstorm list prepared by groups presented to him. As he asked and answered about the problems/obstacles observed by Turkish young people and shared his opinons about them... Sometimes, bringing in some of the new implementations to be brought by the Turkish Government.
